Galway Junior Film Fleadh:
The 17th Junior Film Fleadh which takes place from 16–19 November in Galway’s Town Hall Theatre, Huston Film School and City Museum. A varied and exciting line-up is on offer for young people from the ages of 4–18 years, which will include a mixture of features, documentaries and workshops to support the curriculum, develop the imagination and stimulate both discussion and creativity. The programme has a distincly international flavour, with features including The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec (France), Arrietty (Japan), Wasteland (Brazil), and Neukölln Unlimited (Germany).
Of particular interest to youth arts practitioners will be the Irish entry Ballymun Lullaby, a truly incredible film about music teacher Ron Cooney who has worked with young people in Ireland’s only high-rise housing estate, using music to give voice to their stories. Louder than a Bomb, an inspiring story of four teen-teams as they prepare for the world’s largest youth poetry slam in Chicago, will also appeal. As ever the Shorts programme highlights budding filmmaking talents from schools and local groups. Alongside these runs Gearrscannáin, a series of thought-provoking shorts which take Irish beyond the classroom.
