Update from the Youth Arts Programme

Arts and Youth Work Residency 2016/2017 now open for applications

We are delighted that we have secured funding for the Arts and Youth Work Residency programme which has been so popular with both artists and youth organisations over the past number of years.  We are now inviting applications from youth work organisations or youth arts facilities with an interest in working in collaboration on youth arts projects.  

The scheme is open now and applications should be submitted by Monday September 5th to niamh@nyci.ie  

Funding of up to €5000 is available for projects to run a residency project or you can apply for up to €1500 for a development grant which will enable you to finalise your partnership and develop a full proposal for a residency.

Certificate in Youth Arts 2016/2017

Applications are now open for the Certificate in Youth Arts Programme which is an accredited training programme run in conjunction with Maynooth University.  The closing date for applications is August 19th.  The course invites applicants from both the arts sector who are working with young people and from youth organisations who are using the arts in their work.  The course runs over 7 modules between November 2016 and June 2017.  For more details and to download a brochure, see our website.

Photography Opportunities

Photography Competition for Youth Groups

NYCI will be launching a photography competition in the Autumn, details of the project will be available on our website in August. If your youth group is interested in participating please contact Niamh@nyci.ie.

Getting Started in Photography

After the recent success of our photography training we will be running training in Dublin and Cork in October, dates to be confirmed over the coming weeks. The training will give you the skills to run a photography project with your youth group,  and/or participate in our up coming competition. News from Summer School

We had a fantastic 3 days in Galway with the Youth Arts Summer School.  15 people took part from all different types of organisations and worked together to create a street theatre event under the guidance of Caoimhe, Brian and Julie who tutored in the areas of street theatre, percussion and song writing.  The final product was performed in the grounds of NUIG as the sun came out after a rainy day!  Thanks to everyone for making the school such a memorable event and hopefully, we will connect up again in the future.  

Arts Advocacy Project

At the end of 2015, the Youth Arts Programme funded three youth organisations to develop a young person led, advocacy project in their local area.  12 young people and 4 youth workers/leaders attended training with NYCI in November 2015 and in April 2016 and each of the groups undertook to plan and implement a project in their area which would highlight the importance of youth arts.  In May, Crosscare's Clondalkin Youth Service held an event which was led by the young people. Having attended 2 training sessions with NYCI the group devised a plan to run a Youth StreetArt Event, to raise awareness of the benefits of involvement in art and to raise money for the Hope Foundation.  

The event contained the following. Live Street art by professional street artists, 2 Street Art Workshops facilitated by the young people, a pizza making work shop, henna painting and a raffle.

  • On the day of the event the group worked exceptionally well, worked on their own initiative, asked lots of questions and really rose to the challenge.

 

  • They had lots of ownership over the event. Other young people from a second street art group that we run came to help on the day which was provided a great opportunity for the groups to mix and be part of such a positive event together.

 

  • They enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to the professional artists, watch them work and be part of the overall creation of art in the community with them.

 

  • Since the event the uptake on places in the younger street art groups has been so many that we have had to created a 2nd 10 - 12yrs Street Art group. making it 3 in total operating the Knockmitten Area.

 

  • There was great feedback in terms of the success of the day. There was a nice community spirit and atmosphere too.

Youth Arts Seminar - Hold the Date

The Youth Arts Programme would like to invite youth organisations with an interest in youth arts to a seminar on September 14th in the Writer's Centre on Parnell Square.  The aim of the day is have some input and discussion on what is happening within youth organisations/youth projects in the area of youth arts and to share information, identify potential new areas of interest and see how we can work together for the coming year.  We hope that it will be an informative, fun and motivating day.  Further details will be posted on the website and circulated in our next newsletter.

"We are the reckless, we are the wild youth!"

 In the ruins of an old, derelict church where young people go to drink, secrets and lies strain friendships to breaking point. During the course of a single night, young lives and loves may be lost or redeemed, but all will be changed forever.
Moving from an old, abandoned church, through the streets, to a young man's bedroom, a bar and a 24 hour burger restaurant, If Walls Could Talk offers a haunting, and often humorous tale of lovers and friendships, their joys, trials and failings. And, maybe, just maybe, on finding yourself before it’s too late.

 

ABOUT UNKNOWN THEATRE

 

Three years ago a group of young people from Ballyfermot Youthreach took a leap of faith into the unknown. Since then they have gone from strength to strength, travelling the country and winning recognition, with cast member Zoe Kelly winning an Olympia Theatre Rising Star Award in 2015. 

Next month they head to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The idea was to take a courageous group of young people, most of whom had never set foot in a theatre before, never seen a play or attended a drama class, and get them to engage with theatre at a level comparable to their peers. To challenge the mistaken perception that young people from backgrounds where theatre is often not at first appreciated are somehow less capable than others. The result was a resounding success shouted from the New Theatre in 2014 with their inaugural production Streets and Stories. Now their journey continues with If Walls Could Talk, returning by popular demand before heading to 

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
